Park Accessibility Upgrades

Ammie’s Playground at Boerne City Park is COMPLETE!!

We are happy to announce the completion of our first major project: increased accessibility to Boerne City Park. Ammie’s Playground looks amazing and we are grateful to the donors, volunteers, city of Boerne, and everyone who made this project a reality.

The Boerne Parks Association supports increased accessibility for wheelchair users and other disabled individuals, especially to Boerne’s playgrounds and play areas. This involves additional accessible areas and equipment added to existing facilities and/or the creation of new accessible play areas. We look forward to continuing this effort in other parts of the city.

Honoring Ammie

The story that started the park accessibility campaign happened about a year (maybe less) before a little girl named Ammie passed away. Ammie was adopted at birth by the Palacio family. They had gone to the park and Ammie’s siblings ran to start to play. Ammie tried to follow them in her mobilized walker/scooter but could not get across the uneven mulch.

Ammie became upset (she was nonverbal but could still communicate in her own way) and her family looked around for any equipment that she could use but there was nothing that would accommodate her. The only way that Ammie could still "play" with her siblings was by being in her little sister's car seat (detached from her chair and oxygen) and putting the seat into the old tire swing. Ammie loved the feeling of swinging and belonging on the playground - being a part of the fun like the other kids. That is when the Palacio family reached out and we started the campaign to make that playground and others around town more inclusive.
