Boerne City Campus Natural Area
In connection with the City of Boerne and other community organizations, the second project supported by the Boerne Parks Association involves the restoration and enhancement of the Boerne City Campus Natural Area (BCCNA). The BCCNA is comprised of 13-acres on either side of the Old No. 9 Trail, behind the library. The city and its partners are working towards restoring this area to a native habitat, creating a wildlife corridor and haven within the city.
The vision for this City property is to restore it to its natural state, teeming with native trees, shrubs, wildflowers and grasses, and with a functional riparian area. Wildlife, such as birds, butterflies, a d small mammals will have a place that provides food, shelter and water for those species migrating through our area and for those who are permanent residents. Our human residents will have easy access from the Old Number 9 trail, the library and Main Street, by slipping into the natrual refuge with hiking paths, allowing observation of diverse flora and fauna. This will be a place for relaxation, observation, and education for adults and children.
Even more important, however, this restored 13 acres will perform ecosystem services which are essential for all of us: supporting complex food webs, managing watersheds, moving carbon from the atmosphere to the soil, and supporting native pollinators which are responsible for 80% of our food. As we lose more and more beautiful Hill Country land to development, it becomes imperative that our landscapes, large and small, support these critical services.
More information about this project is forthcoming, but we expect to be able to support this project both financially and with time, offer opportunities for members to volunteer for activities including clean up and replanting.
